Tumpak Sewu, a little Niagara from East Java


Tumpak Sewu Waterfall, also called Coban Sewu Waterfall, is located in Pronojiwo, Lumajang, East Java. It can be reached from Lumajang (12km) or Malang (66km).

Tumpak Sewu is originally taken from Javanese language. The word “sewu” means a thousand or a lot. It is named Tumpak Sewu because there are many streams of waterfalls. Some people also call this waterfall as a “Little Niagara”.

Tumpak Sewu Waterfall is one of the most beautiful waterfalls in Indonesia. Local people even call this waterfall as a hidden paradise. When you travel to East Java, Tumpak Sewu will be one of the most recommended destinations to visit.


The waterfall is about 120 meters high and it comes from 2 (two) different sources, namely from the river Gledek flowing from the slopes of Mount Semeru and from seepage springs. When it is viewed from above, the shape of Waterfall Tumpak Sewu resembles a horseshoe. What makes this waterfall renowned is its characteristics. It has karsts pockets, caves and travertine.  Tumpak Sewu Waterfall offers a variety of interesting activities that you can do. The first activity is to enjoy the view of the waterfall from a height. The tourists or visitors only need to walk as far as 300 meters to get to Pos Panorama by passing snake fruit plantations. There is an area at Pos Panorama where you can enjoy the view of the waterfall and take images against the background of Tumpak Sewu Waterfall.


In addition, other activities that can be done is trekking from Pos Panorama to the valley near the waterfall. Trekking activity is quite challenging and only suitable for you who have a good physical condition. Tourists will pass a narrow path of land with a combination of roads made of bamboo which is quite steep. For safety reason, visitors are strongly recommended to use the services of local guides.




In the valley, you will walk on a bridge which has been built to help visitors to pass through the cliffs that flank and cross the river flow. If you arrive at this location before noon and the weather is sunny, you will be able to enjoy a rainbow that bounces off the waterfall.

In addition to Tumpak Sewu Waterfall, you can also enjoy some other attractions; one of them is named Goa Tetes. One consideration before visiting this place is that you have to prepare waterproof protection for your camera or mobile phone and wear outdoor trekking gear.
